The School of Health Related Professions

The School of Allied Health, as it was called when it opened in 1971, fulfilled the need to expand essential programs related to the ever-changing health care landscape. Rapid medical and technological advances after World War II provided career paths that had not existed in the past. It was created to meet the increasing demand for specialized healthcare professionals due to rapid medical advancements after World War II. Early programs focused on training personnel in fields such as laboratory diagnostics, patient rehabilitation, and the operation of emerging medical technologies.

In 1973, the first baccalaureate program in the school was established – physical therapy. To date, the school has awarded degrees to thousands of students who provide critical services for effective health care throughout the state and beyond.

Over the decades, SHRP has expanded significantly, now offering a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees across healthcare-related disciplines. It has played a vital role in preparing thousands of graduates who provide essential healthcare services in Mississippi and beyond.
